Dallas Clayton: I grew up writing zines, poems, journals, short stories–printing them myself and selling them to people on the street. That’s where I came from. I started doing that when I was 12 or 13, and like most things you start doing at that age, I didn’t really have any scope of how big of a part of my life it would become; it was just something I did because it was fun. I moved to Los Angeles when I was 18 and after a few months of going to shows, art galleries, markets, and performance spaces, people started offering me writing jobs. It was never something I’d planned on–it was just something that happened that way.

Question: How did you make the transition into children?s literature?

Dallas Clayton: I had never written a kids’ book before. Honestly, I’d never written any sort of book before An Awesome Book! But after my son was born I knew I wanted to write something for him while he was still young enough to appreciate it. So I started to write a kids? book a day and the first one I wrote was An Awesome Book! After I put it down on paper I stopped and thought, “Okay–what now?”

Question: People took to it?

Dallas Clayton: Well, the first pressing sold out in a week, then the second pressing sold out between when I ordered it and when it arrived, and then it just kept going. Pretty soon people were ordering so many copies that I basically had to change everything I was doing. I became a kids’ author overnight. I was shipping orders out of my house to people all over the world and every day something even crazier than the day before would happen. Getting letters from people all over the world, requests to come speak, people wanting me to collaborate with them–just tons of unexpected magic.

Question: What is the Awesome World Foundation?

Dallas Clayton: I started the Awesome World Foundation as a way for me to go on tour and read to kids and give back to all of the people who had supported me. Basically, whenever an author would read at my son?s school he would come home with this order form asking for a check to be sent in so he could buy the book. I always just pictured myself as the kid in the class who wouldn’t have had the money to buy the book, so I just thought “I made the book, I can give them away.” So I set up the Foundation to do just that: donate a book for every book sold. So now I travel around, reading to kids all over, giving away books. It’s really the best thing I could ever wish to do with my life. Pretty amazing.

Question: With all of the success of An Awesome Book!, What was your approach to following it up?

Dallas Clayton: Well, I just wanted to make something Awesome. People were so happy with the first one and that made me so happy, I knew making another book could only double that happiness. And after reading to so many kids and talking to them about their hopes and their dreams, I knew I wanted to talk about the idea of being thankful, like all of your aspirations are important but remember to be thankful for all of the small things we tend to take for granted. That’s the idea behind An Awesome Book of Thanks!–dream big, but be thankful for what you have.

Question: What are you hoping people take away from your books?

Dallas Clayton: I guess the same things I would hope people would take away from anything worth appreciating. To offer them a little break in their day to contemplate all the amazing possibilities that life has to offer. For me, kids’ books are just the same as any other art form–your goal shouldn’t be to tell a story, your goal should be to communicate an idea to try and share a theme, to give someone a bigger experience. All the authors that I grew up reading, all the classics I think did that. All the major forces in the modern kids’ world did that: Dr. Seuss, Walt Disney, Jim Henson–those are people whose ideas inspire me.

When photographer Stephen Azzato had just started working on his project Their Love of Music, he found himself on the campaign trail covering the presidential elections. Covering the events with him was a noted rock & roll photographer who said to him, You had to pick the hardest subjects to photograph . While there are many books on rock & roll and on certain musicians, never has anyone taken the time to sit down, one on one, with so many artists and ask why they do what they do. Yet this did not deter Steve as he set out to photograph and interview some of the worlds most famous musicians and those just starting out in music. His questions always revolved around the theme, why do you do this, and how did you get here. The answers are varied and as complex as the musicians themselves. Anna Fermin said simply, I just knew I wanted to serenade somebody. Aaron Neville had a more complex answer A lady had told me once about this little five year old boy who was autistic and the only thing that would calm him down was to put a pair of headsets on him and listen to my voice singing. And that gave me a chill, but it s not me, it s the God in me that maybe touches the God in him. And Buddy Guy said, Most young people now can look up and say I want to learn how to play the horn, the drums, the guitar or something for the love of money. When I picked up the guitar I wanted to learn the guitar for the love of music. And I think that s the big difference of what you got today than what you had back then. Because when I came to Chicago I thought Muddy Waters and all those guys was living the Life of Riley, and come to find out they was almost as bad as me with a day job. They didn t make as much as me. Steve listened to their words as he interviewed them in the green rooms and then created a portrait in which these same feelings come to life for the world to see. Steve found that in the end everyone had one thing in common – their love of music. The foreword is written by musician and newsman Lester Holt. The list of artists is an eclectic assortment from all genres of music, and their words are varied and at times deep, at times funny and always interesting. This book is destined to be a favorite of those who love photography, those who love music and those who love great books.

The London Book Fair is a three day event from April 19-21 next and it will be thronged with over 23,000 industry professionals from all areas of the book trade, but mainly publishers wanting to sell new titles and international rights, and store buyers lining up future stock purchases.

In a conversation with LBF Conference Director Orna O’Brien,The Read discovered a key event will be the annual digital conference held on Sunday 18 April. This will focus on three areas: Readers of Today and Tomorrow; Bringing the Book to Life and Transforming the Core of your Businesses.

As part of the LBF program there will be over 150 other seminars, workshops and panels. O’Brien regrets these will not run live online on the website.

“There are so many we will only be recording the major ones and putting them on the site as podcasts,” she explained. “That may change in the future.”

As a 20-time veteran of attending LBF, Doris Mousdale has plenty of tips for newbies. “The seminar sessions are good – and sometimes you get so hooked in when you go to one that you then stay for the next session. You often feel better just for having been to them!” But leave plenty of time to get to seminars and workshops, just getting across the fair can take 10 or more minutes she warns.

Why does she go? “It fixes you up for the year with all the information you need to plan right through.”

The days of needing to bring back heavy catalogues as excess baggage are gone, she notes with relief. “Now you just get the business cards and look at things online and make contacts by email.”

Mousdale goes to LBF with the intention of seeking out small boutique publishers she would not otherwise discover, and to “catch up with friends.”
She has also supported friend and independent publisher Annabel Langbein in the past at the book fair.
